Aerial Lifts in Industrial and Construction Environments: Working With And Around a Lift

of this page for more information.
Before you begin work with an aerial lift, you need to know how to inspect it properly, set it up and operate it safely. This doesn't just help to keep you safe…it can make sure everyone on the ground stays safe as well. Falling objects, equipment "tipovers" and even electrocution hazards can make working near an aerial lift risky. Knowing how to operate a lift safely, and being aware of these hazards could save you and your co-workers from serious harm.
MARCOM’s course on "Aerial Lifts in Industrial and Construction Environments: Working With And Around a Lift" is the second of a two-part series that has been designed to meet OSHA's training requirements in their "Mobile Elevated Work Platforms" (MEWPs) standard. The course discusses how to inspect an aerial lift, how to prepare to use a lift, how to operate an aerial lift and how to work on the ground near a lift safely.
Topics covered in the course include:
- Criteria for Inspecting MEWPs and the Areas Around Them
- Equipment and Safe Work Practices to Prepare an Aerial Lift for Use
- Procedures to Follow When Raising a Lift
- Safely Lowering the Work Platform of a Lift
- Hazards Associated with Working on the Ground Near an Aerial Lift
- …and more.
Like all MARCOM courses, "Aerial Lifts in Industrial and Construction Environments: Working With and Around a Lift" uses a powerful combination of full-motion, high-definition video filmed in real world locations, along with audio, text, and colorful graphics to provide the most cost-effective training available today. This course is available in English and Spanish.
The "Aerial Lifts in Industrial and Construction Environments: Working With and Around a Lift" MicroLearning curriculum includes the following 3-5 minute courses:

Adaptive Learning
“Adaptive Learning” takes advantage of an employee’s existing knowledge to create training courses that are customized for that employee, and don’t “reteach” them things that they already know. In other words, the Adaptive Learning process determines what an employee already knows about a topic, then structures courses that contain only the information that the employee needs to complete their knowledge of the topic.
These individually customized courses eliminate the largest employee complaint about safety training (“I already know most of this stuff, so why do I have to go through this training again?!”), while potentially recapturing thousands of hours of lost productivity.
MARCOM’s Adaptive Learning courses test employees before they take the course. Then based on the questions that they answer correctly, the course itself determines if the employee knows enough about the information in each chapter in the course to “test out” of that chapter… and if they do, automatically reconfigures the course to skip those chapters.
Reconfiguring the courses in this way typically saves about 50% of an employee’s time in taking a course. Over a year’s time this can recapture a significant amount of lost productivity time for a company of any size, and result in hundreds of thousands of dollars of annual savings.
