MARCOM is proud to announce the release of our new course on “Universal Waste”, now available in English! This interactive course discusses the types of hazardous materials that are considered to be "universal waste", and how to handle and dispose of them according to the EPA Universal Waste Regulation.
Disposing of hazardous waste can be a long and complicated process, but some hazardous waste materials are less harmful to people and the environment than others. So to make it easier to recycle these low-risk hazardous waste materials, the EPA created a different class of hazardous waste called "universal waste". And even though the criteria for their disposal aren't as strict as for other hazardous wastes, there are still processes and procedures that must be followed to ensure that they are handled and transported safely.
Topics covered in this course include:
- The types of materials that are considered to be "universal waste"
- Procedures for handling and transporting universal waste items
- How to store, handle and dispose of universal waste materials safely
- The regulatory requirements for working with and disposing of universal waste
- …and more.
Like all MARCOM courses, this new course on “Universal Waste” uses a powerful combination of full-motion, high-definition video filmed in real world locations, along with audio, text and colorful graphics to provide the most cost-effective training available today.
The "Universal Waste" Micro-Learning curriculum includes the following five 3-5 minute courses:
- "The 'Basics'"
- "Batteries”
- "Pesticides"
- "Mercury-Containing Equipment"
- “Lamps”
- "Aerosol Cans"
The English version of this course is currently available online in Full-Length Interactive, "Adaptive Learning" and Micro-Learning formats as well as Video On Demand (VOD) for streaming over the internet, and a DVD that can be played locally at your facility. Spanish versions of the course will be available soon.

Adaptive Learning
“Adaptive Learning” takes advantage of an employee’s existing knowledge to create training courses that are customized for that employee, and don’t “reteach” them things that they already know. In other words, the Adaptive Learning process determines what an employee already knows about a topic, then structures courses that contain only the information that the employee needs to complete their knowledge of the topic.
These individually customized courses eliminate the largest employee complaint about safety training (“I already know most of this stuff, so why do I have to go through this training again?!”), while potentially recapturing thousands of hours of lost productivity.
MARCOM’s Adaptive Learning courses test employees before they take the course. Then based on the questions that they answer correctly, the course itself determines if the employee knows enough about the information in each chapter in the course to “test out” of that chapter… and if they do, automatically reconfigures the course to skip those chapters.
Reconfiguring the courses in this way typically saves about 50% of an employee’s time in taking a course. Over a year’s time this can recapture a significant amount of lost productivity time for a company of any size, and result in hundreds of thousands of dollars of annual savings.
